The University of Nairobi – Centre for HIV Prevention and Research (UON-CHIVPR) is based within the College of Health Sciences, UON. It was founded in 2006 as a successor to the defunct Strengthening STD/HIV Control Project which was a collaboration of the Universities of Nairobi and Manitoba for over fifteen years.



  1. To train various cadre of personnel in partner organizations to create capacity for integration of HIV/AIDS interventions in their respective organizations.
  2. To advocate for policy formulation and resource commitment in favour of HIV/AIDS prevention, control, care and support across continuum.
  3. To facilitate mainstreaming of gender in the project programmes.
  4. To build capacity of partner organizations to implement sustainable programmes for HIV/AIDS among vulnerable populations.
  5. To guide partner organizations adapt best practices, monitor and evaluate their own HIV/AIDS programmes.
  6. To carry out cutting edge research for development of replicable models of HIV/AIDS prevention control, care and support across the continuum with a gender focus.
  7. To provide opportunity for National and International Graduate Students to carry out research for their respective degrees.
